Comcast says it will finally make its Peacock streaming service available as a native download on Samsung‘s Tizen OS-powered line of smart TVs and computer monitors.
The announcement was made in a press release e-mailed to reporters Monday afternoon.Matthew Keys@MatthewKeysLive#BREAKING: Comcast says Peacock will launch on Samsung smart TVs on Tuesday.
“Samsung is a powerful platform and we are excited to bring Peacock to millions of their dedicated streamers across the country,” Maggie McLean Suniewick, the executive in charge of Peacock’s business developments at Comcast, said in a statement.
Comcast said the launch of Peacock on Samsung’s smart TVs comes as the cable giant’s broadcast network, NBC, prepares to cover the 2021 summer Olympic games from Tokyo. Peacock will offer some live events and rolling analysis of the games.
“Just in time for the Olympics, our partnership with Peacock also means Samsung users will now have more ways to access and enjoy the Tokyo Games,” McLean Suniewick said.
Launched last year, Peacock is Comcast’s premiere streaming service, offering up programs from the cable giant’s television subsidiary NBC Universal along with licensed TV shows and films.
Peacock offers a free tier with limited programming, a $5 a month ad-supported subscription plan with an expanded library of content and an ultra-premium, $10 a month plan that serves up TV shows and movies without commercials. Comcast’s video and Internet customers with certain equipment have complementary access to Peacock’s premium, ad-supported tier, with the commercial-free version costing them just $5 a month.
In addition to Samsung’s smart TVs, the service is available on other popular streaming TV platforms, including Apple TV, Android TV (Google TV) and Roku. It is also available to stream on smartphones, tablets, in web browsers and on game consoles.
As of late April, the service had 42 million sign-ups, Comcast reported.
