Pretty much any broadband tariff you sign up to will come with a router included. This doesn’t mean that you have to use it, however.
While taking advantage of the router provided is the simplest way to access the internet, it’s not your only option. Using your own router can provide some noticeable advantages, such as providing better WiFi coverage or higher security for your home network.
If you decide to use your own however, there are some things to consider.
Firstly, you need to make sure that your router is compatible with your broadband connection, as it’s not one-size-fits-all. Secondly, you will lose some customer support services from your ISP as they often use the router that they provided you with to troubleshoot.
This means that if you run into difficulty with your connection after installing your own router, you could be on your own.
If you still decide that you want to use your own then you’ll be glad to know that it’s not too tricky. Just consult your router’s manual to find out what the next steps are.
